Munster Junior League Division 2 Clonakilty v Fermoy   03/10/2018

Munster Junior League Division 2

Clonakilty 28: Fermoy 10

Clonakilty’s first XV started off their league season with a fantastic bonus point win over Fermoy last Sunday. It was a tough battle but the Clon men persevered and fought till the bitter end.

Clonakilty kicked off in Fermoy but from the off it was Fermoy took the reigns with a fantastic start for the home side. They attacked the Clonakilty line with gusto and showed why they were promoted to Junior 2 rugby last season. After a mere 5 minutes the home side breached the Clonakilty line and went over for a well worked try. This was followed by the conversion putting Clonakilty on the back foot and down by 7 points. Fermoy continued to dominate the first half with Clon finding it difficult to find the space within the strong home side defence. Clonakilty’s frustrations at this was apparent when Fermoy were awarded a penalty which they slotted between the posts with ease widening the gap to 0-10 to the home side. In the later half of the first half Clonakilty started to take better control of the game and began to claw back possession. With 5 minutes to go in the half, Clonakilty were pushing hard on the Fermoy line when Aaron Hayes bounded over the line for Clon’s first try of the day. Andy McCarthy followed up with the conversion bridging the gap towards the end of the half. As the half time whistle blew, Clonakilty had a new found confidence that ensured the second half was going to bring a serious battle.

Half Time Score: Clonakilty 7 – Fermoy 10

The second half was hard fought contest that saw both sides struggling to gain the upper hand. It was well into the half until we saw any score with errors coming from both sides and both putting their bodies on the line to claim the win. Eventually it was Clonakilty who were to score to steal the lead when Aaron Hayes stole the ball from inside Clonakilty’s own 22’ and made a super break to run the length of the field solo and score Clonakilty’s 2nd try. Andy McCarthy once again converted turning the tables on the game and putting Clonakilty in front 14-10. It was then Clonakilty hit their stride and after some super work from all at the breakdown the Clon men worked up to a super play which eventually saw out-half Mark Purcell go over the line which was swiftly followed by a great conversion by Shane Deasy. The Clonakilty team could then smell the bonus point and went in for the kill with a huge assault on the Fermoy line.  And just at the last, it was Batt Duggan who surged forward and secured the bonus point with an excellent try. Again Shane Deasy secured the extra 2 points just as the final whistle blew. Sheer elation and relief swarmed the Clonakilty players that they had secured a bonus victory to start off the league in the sweetest way.

Next week Clonakilty’s league game with Castleisland has been postponed so Clon’s first team will be back in action in the Challenge Shield away to Waterford on Sunday 14th October. Next weekend Clonakilty’s 2nd team begin their season at home V Ballincollig at 12pm. So please come out and show your support.
