Munster Junior League Division 2 Clonakilty v Crosshaven   28/03/2018

Munster Junior League Division 2

Clonakilty 17: Crosshaven 21

Last Sunday saw Clonakilty’s first XV take on league toppers Crosshaven at home in Shannonvale. The home side were hoping to shake up the table and were ready to do battle with the strong side.

Clonakilty kicked off into near perfect conditions but were put through their paces from the off. Crosshaven went straight on the attack and showed off their physicality and after 20 minutes Crosshaven were rewarded when they broke the Clonakilty defences, sprinted for the line and dove under the posts for their first try of the day. Clonakilty responded well and worked well for a time to work past the Crosshaven defence. The home side were soon awarded a penalty which Eoghan Deasy slotted over with ease, bringing the score to 3-7. Clonakilty continued to perform well in attack with some great scoring opportunities but were unfortunate not to convert into points. This was due to Crosshaven’s strength and speed shown all over the pitch that kept them in the driving seat for the rest of the half. Just at the whistle, Crosshaven were awarded a penalty which soared between the up rights growing their lead at the break.

Half time score: Clonakilty 3: Crosshaven 10

Clonakilty came out fighting in the second really testing the visiting side and brought this battle to an exciting finish. Crosshaven continued to show their dominance in attack with some fantastic plays that put the Clon defence to the test. It wasn’t long into the 2nd half when Crosshaven broke through once again and ran through the Clonakilty defences into the corner for their 2nd try giving them a lead of 3-15 with a missed conversion. Clon showed their perseverance and went on the counter attack. It was Andy McCarthy for Clonakilty who took his opportunity and broke ranks to go over the line for Clonakilty’s 1st try which was followed up with the conversion from Eoghan Deasy bridging the gap to 10-15. The game continued with Clon trying hard to break through Crosshaven’s strong defence once again but errors came with it and Crosshaven were soon awarded a 2nd penalty which they took to the posts and over extending their lead once again to 10-18. But the home side never gave up and when Rob Howick collected the ball he saw and gap and made a gallant effort running half the pitch through Crosshaven’s and went over for Clonakilty’s 2nd try sending the fans wild with excitement that a comeback may now be on. Deasy once again powered over the conversion putting the score at 17-18 with only 5 minutes remaining. Both sides put in a tremendous effort for the dying minutes neither team wanting to give an inch. Unfortunately it was not to be for the Clon men and narrow margins at the last saw Crosshaven come away with another kickable penalty in the last few seconds which they comfortable converted finishing the game giving themselves a comfortable lead at the top of the league table and scuppering Clonakilty ambitions.

Crosshaven showed why they are now in prime position to be promoted with a strong well executed performance but Clonakilty showed be proud that they were able to be up and a great fight and almost steal the win at the end. Next Sunday Clonakilty remain in Shannonvale to take on Muskerry for their last home league game of the season. Kick-off is as always 2.30pm please come out and show your supports.
